Rajasthan when translated to English means the 'land of kings' and so it is. It is the richest state of India in terms of magnificent palaces, forts, colorful festivals and bazaars. The Aravalli range divides the 342,000 sq km state in two parts from the northeast to the southwest. Once ruled by three great kingdoms- Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner, the Thar Desert covers the western plains. The eastern plains have the busy state capital Jaipur and the Ranthambhore National Park. In the south are the fairy tale palaces, temples, lakes and forts of Udaipur.

The places of interest in Rajasthan are:

1. Jaipur

A maze of enthralling bazaars, sumptuous palaces and celebrated sights, the "Pink City" Jaipur is known so by the colour of its buildings. One can find tradition and modernity co-existing in the state. Turbaned village elders with their camels and youngsters driving motorbikes can be seen on the same street. The Bazaars of the city offer everything from shoes to jewellery. The main attractions in the city are Gobind Dev Temple, Chaugan Stadium, Hawa Mahal, City Palace Museum, Jantar Mantar, Government Central Museum, Moti Doongri Palace, Rambagh Palace, Jawahar Kala Kendra, and the Jal Mahal. Jaipur is also famous as the center of Traditional Rajasthani Jewellery.

2. Amber Fort

The fort palace of Amber fort was established in 1592 by Man Singh I on the remains of an old 11th century fort. The fort was the Kachhawala bastion until 1727, when their capital moved to Jaipur. The various buildings added by Jai Singh I (r.1621-67) are what constitute the splendid centerpiece. The star features of Amber fort are Sheesh Mahal, Jas Mandir, Ganesh Pol, and the Shila Devi temple.

3. Deeg

Deeg was once the capital of the Jat kings of Bharatpur, and came to limelight after the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century. Deeg's Raja Suraj Mal and his son, Jawahar Singh were keen builders of lavish pleasure palaces ant the most remarkable of these is the Deeg Water Palace, a romantic summer retreat for the Jat kings.

4. Keoladeo Ghana National Park

Keoladeo Ghana which derives its name from a Shiva temple (Keoladeo) within a dense forest (ghana) is a UNESCO world heritage site and is regarded as one of the world's most important bird sanctuaries. The park spreads over 29 sq km (11 sq miles) of wetlands, and attracts a wide variety of migrant and water birds that fly in each winter from places as distant as Siberia. You can also find the famed nilgai and many other animals in the Park.

5. Shekhawati

The region is named after its 15th century ruler Rao Shekha and has a number of fascinating small towns with well-preserved painted havelis, forts and temples. The most interesting are Lachhmangarh and Fatehpur with their grand havelis; Ramgarh famous for its Shani temple, Mahansar which has the magnificent Sone ki Dukan Haveli (abundantly worked in gold leaf), Bissau has the 18th century Keshargarh Fort and Churu for the Surana Double Haveli.

6. Pushkar

"Petals fell from the hands of Brahma the Creator and it formed lakes." This legend gives the name to the town of Pushkar where pushpa means flowers and kar means hands. Pushkar is a pilgrim town of lakes and 400 temples and life revolves around its lakeside ghats, temples and vibrant & colourful bazaars. Best time to visit the town is in October/November when the town comes alive as The Pushkar fair begins. Place to visit are Brahma Temple, Rangji temple, and ghats of Pushkar.

7. Ajmer

Famous throughout the subcontinent for its holy Muslim shrine 'Dargah Sharif' the tomb of the great Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (1143-1235), the town has a bazaar and two marble mosques built by the Mughal emperors Akbar and Shah Jahan in the 16th and 17th centuries. Ajmer has many places to witness brilliant architectural beauty and important among those are Adhai-Din-ka-Jhonpra (Hut of two and a half days), Mayo College, Nasiyan Temple and Taragarh fort.

8. Bikaner

Prospered like the other two Kingdoms of Rajasthan (Jodhpur and Jaisalmer), Bikaner has a great deal to offer visitors. The city was founded in 1486 by Rao Bika the younger son of Rao Jodha, the ruler of Jodhpur. With its old walled town where camels amble past colourful stalls, the city has many temples and palaces. The interesting places to visit are Junagarh fort, Walled City, and the Lalgarh Palace.

9. Jodhpur

The epitome of all the romance and feudal splendor of Rajasthan, Jodhpur, is the second largest city in state. Famous for its magnificent palaces, colourful bazaars, sands of the Thar desert and the grandiose Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur continues to be a prosperous trade centre. 10. Jaisalmer

The Havelis and Palaces of Jaisalmer, made of the local golden-yellow sandstone, are the most spectacular paradigm of Rajasthani stonemason's art. Founded in the 12th century by Maharawal Jaisal of the Bhatti Rajput clan Jaisal is today a remote outpost in the Thar Desert. Places to stopover in Jaisalmer are Jaisalmer Fort, Manik Chowk, Badal Vilas, Gadisagar Lake, Salim Singh's Haveli, Nathmalji's Haveli and Patwon ki Haveli.

11. Mount Abu

Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station and welcomes you to witness one of India's most striking sights – the Dilwara Jain Temples. Out of these five marble temples, the best ones are the Vimala Vasahi Temple and the Luna Vasahi Temple. The sculpturesque details on the doorways, archways, pillars and ceilings of these temples are simply breathtaking. This place is a must in any itinerary.

12. Ranakpur

One of the five great holy places of Jain faith, Ranakpur is set in a secluded, wooded valley of the Aravalli Hills. The place offer a good deal to visitors. The sites worth watching are the Ranakpur temple complex (Adinath temple), Parvanatha Temple and Hindu Sun temple

13. Kumbhalgarh

Built by Maharana Kumbha (r1433-68), the chief attraction of Kumbhalgarh, the indomitable and gigantic Kumbhalfort fort stands at a height of 1050m and was known as the "The Eye of Mewar" because it offered a commanding view of the countryside for miles around. Other places for a look in Kumbhalgarh are the Navachoki Mamdeva Temple, Deogarh and the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary.

14. Udaipur

Founded by Maharan Udai Singh in 1559, the fairy-tale city of Udaipur is covered by a ring of hills and within are all its marble palaces and lakes. The city has scenic havelis, ghats and temples and the main attraction is the massive City Palace. The places of interest in Udaipur are the Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas (Lake Palace), Jagdish Mandir, Fateh Sagar Lake, Saheliyon ki Bari (Garden of the Maids of Honour) and Ahar.

15. Chittorgarh

Witness to the well-known and tumultuous past, Chittorgarh's ruined palaces, temple and towers covers 692 acres and stand at an altitude of 180m (591 ft). The main places to see are the Chittorgarh fort, Fateh Prakash Palace, Kumbha Shyam Temple, Vijay Stambh ("Victory Tower"), Gaumukh Reservoir, and Padmini Palace.

16. Bundi

Often referred to as the undiscovered jewel of Rajasthan, Bundi is surrounded by rugged, thickly forested Aravalli Hills. Bundi was founded in 1341 by Rao Deva of the Hada Chauhan Rajput Clan and retains much of its historic character. The Palace is Bundi's – and Rajasthan's – jewel. Other important places to top over in Bundi are the Taragarh Fort, Garh Palace, Hathia Pol, Chattar Mahal, Naval Sagar Lake, the 151 ft deep Rani-ki-Baori and the Sukh Niwas Mahal.

17. Ranthambore National Park

The park derives its name from the millennium old Ranthambore fort. Spread over an area of 275 sq km this park lies amidst the Aravalli and Vindhya mountain ranges. The part is a habitat to a diversity of animals and you can find caracals, panthers, jackal and hyenas, numerous species of deer and a rich variety of resident and migratory birds in and around the park.
